News Letter - July 2008

Rachel Stroud

We are sorry to report the death of our life member, Rachel Stroud, at the grand old age of 95.
Rachel joined the Club in the late 1960s. She regularly came out on walks, leading many of them, until 1982, when increasing immobility curtailed her walking. In due course she became Rambles Organiser, Secretary, Chairman and finally President, resigning that post at the 1995 AGM, at which time she was awarded life membership.
Rachel attended every AGM and winter lunch until about two years ago. She retained her excellent memory all her life, and with her calm good sense she solved several little problems the committee encountered from time to time. A remarkable lady, and one who served the Club well.
Several longstanding members attended her funeral at the Crematorium.

Petronella Barton

We are also sorry to report the death of former member Pet (Petronella) Barton, at the age of 87.
Pet joined the Club in the 1970s and was a keen rambler and walk leader. She was a cheerful person and always made newcomers welcome. She also served on the committee for many years, until her increasing deafness became too much of a handicap. In the early 1980s she went on a trip to the Himalayas, and on her return gave a slide show and barbecue at her home which many members enjoyed.
Several members and former members attended her funeral at the Heavitree Catholic Church.

Membership

We now have 70 paid up members and one life member. Welcome to Anne Harris-Deans. We hope you enjoy many walks with us.

Lost Property

A brown coloured Leki walking pole was left behind on the Malmshead walk. Whoever is the owner, please telephone 860490 as it has been passed to us for safe keeping. Bill also has a pair of black waterproof trousers someone left in the boot of his car. Please phone him on 466240 to re-claim them.

Fuel Charge Increase

You will all be aware that the cost of fuel has rocketed recently. After careful calculations you will be pleased to learn that the Committee has decided that we will not be increasing our mileage rate. So it remains at 8p per mile. We have also decided to introduce a capped rate at no more than £8 per walk for when we travel a longer distance. Obviously the situation will be kept under review.

70th Anniversary Walk

You will see that the first walk on the enclosed programme is our 70th Anniversary Walk. So PLEASE pull all the stops out to attend as we are hoping to get as many members as possible walking. It is quite an honour to belong to a club that was established in 1938! The Express and Echo are hopefully going to publish an article in their 'Nostalgia' section about us and I am hoping they will be able to take a group photograph too.

Club Badges

In honour of our 70th anniversary we have also been able to re-introduce our club badge. These will be available soon at £4 each. The design is unchanged (ie. our club logo) and some members have a sample on their fleece/rucksack. Please send a cheque made payable to Exeter Rambling Club if you wish to order. Currently we have 30 available. The address to send your cheque is the same as on the holiday choice slip!

Medical Reminders

Don't forget to check yourself for ticks as the incidence tick borne diseases in increasing. Don't forget clothing & shade are the best protectors from the sun. Avoid exposure between 12 noon and 3pm.

Holidays

Cornwall - Eleven members thoroughly enjoyed a break at Mullion Cove. Good fortune was on our side as we were extremely lucky with the weather. Although it was very rough in Cornwall at the time, thanks to a meteorogical phenomenom where, with heavy showers combined with a sea breeze, the clouds form inland before they deposit their rain, so we on the coast escaped all but the mildest short shower. Our hotel was excellent and many thanks once again to John M for the whole weekend and guiding our walks.

Italian Lakes - September 6th to 16th inclusive, with Ramblers Holidays. Unfortunately Al and Margaret have had to withdraw from this holiday. So, there are two vacancies in a twin room for anyone who won't mind sharing. Anyone interested please get in touch with Graham immediately on 841697 for further details. If we cannot get two people, Ramblers have said that one person could still have the room.

Next Year - the HF break was so successful we are already planning one for next year. We have chosen May so as to give those who also like to go abroad in September, sufficient time between holidays, and for those who prefer not to go abroad, to have a complete holiday in the UK.
