News Letter - January 2008MembershipOur numbers continue to grow. We now have 83 paid up members and two life members. Mike Brailey, Robert Brunt and Ruth Butler. May they enjoy many walks with us in the future. We are now beginning to receive enquires via our new website.SickiesBarbara M has made fantastic progress after her recent hip replacement and will no doubt be out with us before too long. Well done Barbara!I am sorry to inform you that Rachel Stroud, our President, is currently in hospital. A.G.M. 2008This year’s A.G.M. will be held at the Methodist Hall in Sidwell Street at 2.30pm on Saturday 15th March (doors open at 2pm). Please note that we will be using the main hall this year. The entrance is via the double doors on the corner of the main building. We will still have the use of the kitchen. The Agenda will be available on the day and will include the usual formalities such as election of the Committee, Chairman and Treasurer’s Reports. Subscriptions will also be due on that day. Cheques should be made payable to Exeter Rambling Club. Motions and Propositions to be discussed at the meeting, should each be properly proposed, seconded and submitted to the Secretary at least two weeks beforehand (1st March). As a trial, we shall not be having a speaker this year and will begin with the formal meeting. Let us know what you think. We shall have our usual tea after the formalities and you are requested to bring a small item of food. Tea and coffee will be provided by the Committee. In order to participate in decisions about our Club, please do your best to attend. Former MemberLong standing members will remember Hettie Rattenbury, who sadly passed away, aged 94, in early November. Hettie was a member for over 30 years from the 60’s to the 90’s. She will be remembered as an excellent leader, and for her very warm personality.CommitteeCan the Committee please remind you of who they actually are!!
If members have any enquiries, questions about anything, including social events and holidays, could they please contact the relevant Committee member. This avoids wires getting crossed, misunderstandings and non Committee members being troubled by unnecessary phone calls. It is most appropriate for a Committee member who is organizing an event of any kind, to know first what is going on. Thanks for your co-operation. HolidaysBrecon – 26 members are now booked on this holiday. An excellent response.Italian Lakes – A group of members have booked a Ramblers Holiday in September (6 – 16). This is a D Grade holiday plus sightseeing. Ramblers have made this an exclusive holiday for our group and there are a few places left if anyone is interested in joining us. Graham our Secretary has all the details or you can telephone Ramblers direct on 01707 331133. Dawn is the lady who is handling our booking - ref.no. 1745. For those of you who have the current brochure the holiday is on page 81 and called ‘The Romance of the Italian Lakes’. We are planning to travel to LHR by National Express Coach. The Lizard Peninsula – John M has organized a long weekend in Cornwall in May (16 – 19). The long walks will be along the coastal path and 11 people have so far booked. We will be staying at the Mullion Cove Hotel for the three nights. Again there are some places left and anyone interested should phone John on 01392 851350 for further details. SocialSkittles - About 25 of us enjoyed another skittles evening in November, with our usual fish and chip supper. The club made £10 profit on this evening as we get a discount on the hire price of the skittle alley. This seems to be turning into an annual autumn event so keep a look out for future dates.Late Christmas/Winter Lunch We now have 37 people booked for the lunch at the Red Lion. Again, an excellent response AND we qualify for our free glass of wine!!! . Bird Watching on the River Exe – Graham is organizing a trip with Stuart Line Cruises. Details are as follows: Date: Saturday 8th March 2008 Time: The boat leaves the quayside at Exmouth at 1.30pm Duration: The trip lasts approx. 3 hours Cost: £9 per head. If we get more than 10 people you will be given a refund of 50p on the day For those of you who haven’t already been on one of these trips they offer excellent value. Hot and cold drinks plus snacks are served on board – and there are toilets. Local wildlife expert Rod Lawrence gives the commentary and has the knack of spotting birds well before you, giving you time to get the binoculars (plenty available for loan) focused on them and follow them in flight. He also gives lots of information about the birds’ way of life. I am informed that unfortunately Rod will be giving up these trips the following day so we will be quite honoured to be one of the final groups to benefit from his knowledge and expertise. Again Graham our Secretary has all the details. If you wish to come along, please send a cheque for £9 made payable to the Exeter Rambling Club, to Pete our Treasurer. The final date for reservations is Thursday 14th Feb. Fuel ChargesEveryone will be aware that the price of fuel continues to rise, lately at an alarming rate. It has therefore been decided by the Committee that our mileage rate will increase to 8p per mile, with immediate effect. Thankyou. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
