News Letter - April 2008

Web Site

Please have a look at our Website and you will note that it continues to improve. There are some good group photos. However Nigel who administers the site for us would like to receive some landscape photos to illustrate our varied walking terrain. For you budding photographers they must be digital and put on to a CD and sent to him. Nigel‘s address is Pollards, The Village, Yeoford, Crediton EX17 5JD.

News from Former Members

Lilian Lamzed, a Club member for 60 years unfortunately recently sent the Committee her letter of resignation. We would all like to send her our good wishes and thank her for her enthusiastic and long standing membership.
Rachel Stroud one of our two Life Members, has recently moved to a nursing home. Several members have her new address if you should wish to visit her.
Petronella Barton is currently extremely unwell but by the time you read this she should be home from hospital. The Committee have sent her a card and all your good wishes.

News from the A.G.M. / Committee

Despite initial enthusiasm, it was felt that the coach trip to the Eden Project, for which we used some of our legacy, was not particularly well attended. Therefore it has been decided, for this year at least, that instead of another trip, to use some of Ken‘s legacy to offset an increase in the membership fee. Then every member benefits.
The AGM was very poorly attended this year. Although the weather was awful it was generally felt the main reason was the lack of a speaker. The Committee would be grateful if you would (politely!) let them know if this was the case. We shall then endeavour to get a speaker for the 09 AGM.

Medical Reminders

As the summer approaches we are more at risk of tick bites. To lessen the chance of getting bitten, wear sensible clothing and check your skin after a walk. For more information look on the Lyme Disease Action website or write to Lyme Disease Action at PO Box 235, Penryn, TR10 8WZ, enclosing a s.a.e. There are leaflets and hooks for tick removal available. Lyme Disease can have wretched consequences if not treated promptly. If you think you are vulnerable, say, from noticing a tick and then a rash appears around the bite area, visit your GP. Like so many ailments, if diagnosed early these problems can be treated successfully, unlike the full blown infection.
Secondly, our old favourite, the sun. Due to the fact that sunscreens have become more effective over the years, some people may now be at risk of not building up quite enough Vitamin D. Our stock of this vitamin depreciates during the winter and we build it up again during the summer months. The latest advice from Cancer Research is to still take sensible precautions to protect your skin from harmful rays, avoiding the 11am — 3pm period, covering up and using your cream, but people would benefit from half an hour a day outdoors without sunscreen.

Important Date for your Diary

Started on 20th March 1938, this year is our Club‘s 70th anniversary. There will be a 70th anniversary walk on 3rd August, details in the next programme. There will be a long and short walk provided and we will all finish at the same place — a good tea shop! We hope to get as many members as possible out on that particular day.

Future Event

We are trying to gauge interest in a possible coach (fare payable) trip to Bridgewater Carnival on the evening of Friday 7th November. Anyone interested please leave a message with Graham (841697).
