News Letter - October 2007

Sickies

To start on a positive note you will be pleased to know all the people who have had various operations recently are doing well. Rob is already out walking. It goes to show that if you keep fit you will experience a better recovery after any procedure. Thank you to all those who have enquired after my progress. I got rid of my surgical shoe this morning so now it is a gradual return to walking over the next few months - before I have the other foot 'tampered' with early next year!

Membership

We now have 81 members. Welcome to Sue Jones who we hope will enjoy many walks with us.

Web Site

We hope you were pleased with your initial glimpse of our web-site. It is being continually improved and is now able to take memorable photographs of Club walks/events. So, if you have any digital photos go to the main site and click on the 'Photos' option and follow the instructions to e-mail it to Nigel.

Walks

There was a good response to the first short walk of approx. 5 miles. About 15 people turned out and many were members who hadn't been out for some time. Comments made to Committee members have been encouraging. The next similar walk is at the end of October - see last programme. The enclosed programme is excellent also. Not only are there three more short walks but there are three different levels of walk and seven different leaders. Well done those who have put effort into all of this.

News from the Committee

It is felt that a timely reminder of our walk etiquette is required. To refresh our memories then:
  • Please, do not walk in front of the leader unless invited to do so.
  • Listen and respond to any instructions the leader may give regarding routes and breaks.
  • Be ready to move on when the leader requests. There is usually 5 minutes notice given.
  • Please, when walking, let the leader or back marker know if you are leaving the group for a 'comfort stop' or for any other reason.

Social

The Committee will be looking at putting on a couple more social events next year. We have already received several good suggestions. However if you have an idea please also do the research and pass on all the arrangement details to a Committee member. Pete and Pat are more than willing to make lists/bookings/phone calls/collect fees but we cannot do the research too. We need details of cost, a contact, parking, prices and all the things that go with arranging a trip for a group.

The long walkers enjoyed their holiday in Greece where they had much better weather than we experienced in the UK this summer.

Skittles Evening - This was mentioned in the last Newsletter. The date is Wed. 14th November at The Lamb Inn, Silverton. Cost = £5.50 including a fish and chip supper. Time - leave Exeter at 7pm to arrive by 7.30pm. Please ring Pete or Pat to book your place by Monday 12th November.

Christmas Meal (details) - Last year's Christmas meal arrangements met with a mixed response. The Committee have looked at several different venues, taking into account menu, location and cost. It has therefore been decided to have this year's meal on Sunday 20th January, at The Red Lion, Broadclyst, 12:30 for 1:00 pm. This will give us the opportunity for a walk in the Killerton area after our meal. Please see the attached booking form and menu choices and note that the closing date is 14th December. The Red Lion is convenient for Exeter so it would be appreciated if groups of friends could make their own arrangements to get together and share car transport. If you wish not to drive so you can enjoy a Christmas drink (or use your free bus pass!) then The Red Lion is on a good bus route with a very convenient stop just outside the pub! Currently the Sunday timetable reads 12:15 leave Exeter, arrive Broadclyst 12:30 and for the return either leave Broadclyst at 14:53 or 16:53. But please check the timetable nearer the date to ensure there have been no alterations. If anyone is really, and we mean really stuck, please phone Pete or Bill. Thanks.

Club Holiday to Brecon (details) - You will be pleased to know Graham has been making extensive enquiries about a Club holiday. He has also canvassed as many members as possible to gauge the interest. We are now able to offer a 3 night break with HF Holidays at Brecon. Some of you may already know HF are a well known company who specialize in walking and special interest holidays. There are further details and a booking form enclosed. Please read all this information carefully as if offers excellent value. If you want to commit please forward your deposit without delay. Places are limited due to the number of single/twin/double rooms available and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis upon receipt of your deposit. Where people are sharing a twin room we will endeavor, if it is possible, to put friends together if you let us know with whom you would like to share. In addition we will try to put friends for transport purposes. To make it fair and particularly with luggage capacity in mind, we would like car drivers to have no more than two paying passengers each.
My problem at the moment is that HF are giving a cut off date for deposits and we have to bear this in mind with the current postal strikes! Just our luck, but with our usual resourcefulness we will I am sure get over this stumbling block. Thank you for your help.
